    Entry Requirements

While specific requirements vary by programme, here are the general guidelines for admission to undergraduate studies at NWU for 2026.

    1. National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Equivalent:
You must have a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum achievement rating of 4 (50-59%) in four 20-credit subjects from the designated subject list, or an equivalent qualification.

    2. Admission Point Score (APS):
The APS is a crucial calculation used by NWU. Your APS is calculated by adding the achievement ratings of your six best subjects (excluding Life Orientation). Each programme has a minimum APS requirement, which can be found in the faculty-specific prospectus.

    3. Language Requirement:
A minimum rating of 4 (50%) in either English or Afrikaans (Home Language or First Additional Language) is required for all programmes. Some programmes may require a higher rating.

    4. Programme-Specific Subject Requirements:
This is the most important variable. Many degrees require specific subjects and minimum ratings. For example:

    • Engineering & Science: Typically require Mathematics and Physical Science at high levels (often 5 or 6).
    • Commerce: Usually require Mathematics (sometimes Mathematical Literacy is accepted for certain programmes).
    • Law & Humanities: May have specific language or social science requirements.
    • Health Sciences: Have strict, high requirements for subjects like Mathematics, Physical Science, and Life Sciences.

    5. Additional Selection Criteria:
For oversubscribed programmes (like Medicine, Pharmacy, Psychology, etc.), selection is competitive and may include additional tests, interviews, or a ranking process based on academic performance beyond the minimum requirements.

    6. Extended Programmes:
The “Extended” versions of degrees (e.g., Extended BCom) are structured over four years instead of three. They include additional foundational support and have slightly lower APS and subject requirements, providing an alternative access route for students who show potential.

Your future starts with the right information. We wish you the best as you take this exciting step towards applying to North-West University
