    Meaning of Matric Rewrite

A Matric Rewrite (often referred to as a “Supplementary Exam” or “Upgrade”) is an official process that allows individuals who have previously completed their National Senior Certificate (NSC) to re-sit specific subjects. The goal is either to pass a previously failed subject or to achieve a higher mark in a passed subject to meet the requirements for university admission, bursaries, or specific employment opportunities. It is a formal, recognised pathway administered by the DBE and Umalusi.

    Requirements for Matric Rewrites

The DBE allows eligible candidates to:

    • Rewrite failed subjects to obtain a pass.
    • Upgrade existing results to achieve a higher achievement level (e.g., moving from a D to a B).
    • Sit for either the May/June or October/November examination sessions (note: the May/June session is typically for full-time repeat candidates, while Oct/Nov includes part-time candidates).

A well-known institution offering focused revision programmes, experienced educators, and flexible study options to help rewrite candidates succeed.

    2. Rhodes Technical College

Provides subject-specific coaching and revision classes, particularly strong in technical and commercial subjects.

    3. ABM College – Matric Rewrite and Upgrades

Offers both contact and distance learning options, with programmes tailored for working adults and recent school leavers.

    4. Phoenix College – Matric Rewrite Centre

Specialises in small classes and personalised attention, helping students target their weak areas effectively.

    5. Star Schools – Supplementary Education

A long-standing provider of distance education with comprehensive study guides and tutorial support for rewrite students.

    6. Whitestone College

Offers structured revision programmes, past paper practice, and academic support for a range of NSC subjects.

Public TVET Colleges that Support Rewriting Matric

Many public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges also offer part-time matric rewrite programmes. These are often a cost-effective option.

    Tshwane South TVET College

As an example, this large TVET college offers part-time National Senior Certificate programmes, allowing students to register for specific subjects.

Requirements for Matric Rewrite in 2026

Who qualifies to register? The opportunity is open to:

    • Learners who failed one or more subjects in their final NSC exams.
    • Candidates who passed but did not meet tertiary admission requirements (e.g., for Bachelor, Diploma, or Certificate programmes).
    • Learners needing stronger Mathematics or physical science results for fields like engineering, medicine, or finance.
    • Adults returning to education to improve their qualifications for career advancement.
    • Students aiming to qualify for specific bursaries or competitive programmes that require higher marks.

How to Apply for Matric Rewrites 2026

Follow these key steps to ensure you are correctly registered for the 2026 examinations:

    1. Register for examinations via the DBE e-Services portal.
All official exam registration is done through the government’s central platform: https://www.eservices.gov.za. You will need to create a profile and complete the online application during the registration period (typically early in the year for May/June exams).
    2. Choose a support college (optional but recommended).
Select a registered institution for academic preparation and revision. Enroll with one of the colleges listed above or another accredited provider. They will assist with subject content but do not register you for the final exam—you must do that yourself via e-Services.
    3. Prepare the required documents.
Have the following ready for your exam registration and college application:
      • South African ID, passport, or birth certificate.
      • Previous matric statement of results.
      • Proof of residence.
    4. Confirm exam centers and subject selections.
During the e-Services registration, you will select your preferred exam center and specify exactly which subjects you are rewriting or upgrading. Double-check this information before submission.

Taking the step to rewrite your matric is a commendable commitment to your future. With careful planning, the right academic support from a reputable college, and diligent use of the official DBE e-Services portal, you can approach the 2026 exams with confidence and dramatically improve your prospects.
