    iSimangaliso Tertiary Education Support Programme

    This programme is a strategic investment in the youth from the communities surrounding and invested in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. By funding tertiary studies, it aims to build a pipeline of skilled professionals who can contribute to the park’s management, conservation, tourism, and sustainable development, ensuring its legacy thrives for generations.

    Academic and Institutional Requirements

    To be eligible, you must meet specific academic criteria:

    • Year of Study: You must be registered for first-year undergraduate study only for the 2026 academic year.
    • Eligible Institutions: Your studies must be at one of these institutions:
      • University of KwaZulu-Natal
      • University of Zululand
      • Mangosuthu University of Technology
      • Durban University of Technology
    • Important Exclusion: The bursary does not cover postgraduate studies or returning undergraduate students (i.e., those entering their second year or higher).

    NSFAS Requirement

    This is a non-negotiable prerequisite.  All applicants must:

    1. Apply for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for 2026.
    2. Have confirmation that they have been awarded the NSFAS Bursary for 2026.
      Proof of your NSFAS approval is compulsory and must be submitted with your application.

    Required Field

    Your chosen field of study must align with the operational and developmental needs of the Park. Eligible fields include:

    • Conservation
    • Social Sciences
    • Development Studies
    • Tourism
    • Finance
    • Information Technology
    • Human Resources
    • Engineering
    • Infrastructure
    • Supply Chain Management

    Community and Residency Requirements

    This bursary is specifically reserved for South African citizens with a direct connection to iSimangaliso. You must be a verifiable member of one of the following groups:

    • Land Claimant Communities of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, or
    • Residents of the uMkhanyakude District Municipality living in areas close to the park, or
    • Residents of the Mfolozi Local Municipality, particularly the Sokhulu area.

    You must provide official supporting documentation (e.g., a letter from a traditional authority, ward councillor, or municipal office) to confirm your community membership or residency. Applications without this proof will not be considered.

    Required Documents

    Prepare these documents for your application pack:

    • Proof of university registration for 2026 (or provisional acceptance).
    • Proof of NSFAS bursary approval for 2026.
    • Certified copy of your South African ID (or proof of application if waiting).
    • Official proof of residence as outlined in the community requirements.

    How to Apply for iSimangaliso Wetland Park Bursaries 2026

    Follow these steps carefully to ensure a complete application.

    Step 1: Complete the Official Application Form

    Download and fill out the iSimangaliso Tertiary Education Support Programme Application Form for Undergraduate Study in 2026 in full. Ensure all your personal, academic, and contact details are 100% accurate.

    Step 2: Indicate Community Membership

    On the form, clearly state whether you are from a land claimant community or a neighbouring community. Attach the correct, official supporting letter as specified in the requirements.

    Step 3: Provide Course Preferences

    List your chosen courses in order of preference:

    • First choice course and university
    • Second choice course and university
    • Third choice course and university
      This shows alignment between your studies and the programme’s goals.

    Step 4: Submit a Motivation Statement

    Include a concise motivation (maximum 100 words) that explains:

    • Why you should be considered for the bursary.
    • How your intended career relates to conservation and/or tourism.
      Clarity, passion, and alignment with iSimangaliso’s mission are key.

    Step 5: Email Your Application

    Compile your completed form, motivation, and all supporting documents into a single email. Send it to:
