About Sol Plaatje University

Sol Plaatje University (SPU) was established in 2014 as one of South Africa’s two newest public universities. Located in Kimberley, the capital of the Northern Cape Province, SPU is named after the celebrated intellectual, journalist, and political leader Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje.

The university has rapidly grown into a respected centre for undergraduate and postgraduate study, known for its innovation, technology-enhanced education, and strong community engagement. Its relatively small size means students benefit from more personal lecturer attention and a close-knit campus community.

Kimberley’s lower cost of living compared to major metros, combined with the fact that SPU charges no application fee, makes it one of the most financially accessible universities in South Africa.

Missing a deadline is the most avoidable reason students lose their place. Mark these dates in your calendar.

How to Apply Online — Step by Step

The SPU application process is entirely online. Use the official self-service portal: ienabler.spu.ac.za. Bookmark this link. Do not apply through any third-party website.

Before you begin, ensure you have a stable internet connection, a working email address, and all required documents saved in PDF format.

Step 1: Visit the Application Portal

Go to ienabler.spu.ac.za to access the SPU online application system. This is the official, secure portal.

Step 2: Create Your Profile

Register with your personal details and create a secure login. Use an email address you actively check — all SPU correspondence, including your student number confirmation, will be sent there.

Step 3: Select Your Programme(s)

Browse and select your preferred programme(s). You may choose up to two programmes in a single application. Always select a backup option in case your first-choice programme is full.

Step 4: Upload Your Documents

Upload all supporting documents in PDF format. Ensure every scan is clear and legible. Blurry or incorrectly formatted files are among the most common reasons for application delays.

Step 5: Review and Submit

Carefully review every detail before submitting. You cannot make changes after submission, so accuracy is critical. Submit well ahead of the deadline — never leave it to the last day.

Step 6: Track Your Application

After submission, log back into your profile to monitor status. SPU will also contact you via email or SMS when a decision has been made on your application.

Documents Required

Gather the following documents before you begin your online application to avoid interruptions. All documents must be certified. A Commissioner of Oaths at your nearest police station or post office can certify copies at no cost.

  • Certified copy of your South African ID (or passport for international applicants)
  • Certified copy of your Matric certificate — or latest Grade 11 / semester results if you have not yet written Matric
  • Certified copy of any previous qualification (required for postgraduate applicants)
  • Academic transcript from your previous institution, if you have studied elsewhere
  • A written declaration confirming whether you have previously attended another higher education institution. If you have not, a signed affidavit stating this is required
  • International students only: A valid SAQA evaluation certificate confirming the equivalence of your foreign qualification, plus a valid South African study permit

Admission Requirements & APS

How SPU Calculates Your APS Score

SPU uses a distinctive APS system that differs from most other South African universities. Two features set it apart:

  • 8 points for a distinction: SPU awards 8 points for any subject where you achieve 90% or above, compared to the standard maximum of 7 at most universities.
  • Bonus points for Maths and Home Language: You receive +2 bonus points for a score of 60% or higher, and +1 bonus point for a score between 40–59%. This particularly rewards strong Mathematics students.

General Minimum Requirements

All applicants must hold a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or equivalent. English is compulsory across all programmes — either as a Home Language (Level 4) or First Additional Language (Level 5).

Qualification TypeMinimum APS
Degree Programmes30 (most faculties)
Diploma Programmes25
Higher Certificate Programmes25

Note: Meeting the minimum APS requirement does not guarantee admission. Final acceptance depends on your overall academic standing and available spaces in your chosen programme. Apply early to maximise your chances.
