Who Should Apply for UNISA in 2026?

UNISA has specific categories for applicants. Before you start, identify which group applies to you:

    • First-time UNISA Applicants (Undergraduate): You have never studied at UNISA before and wish to apply for a Higher Certificate, Diploma, or Degree.
    • First-time UNISA Applicants (Postgraduate): You have completed an undergraduate degree and wish to pursue an Honours, Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s, or Doctorate.
    • Current UNISA Students: You are changing your qualification or specialization. You must apply for the new qualification even though you are already a student.
    • Returning Students: You have studied at UNISA before but were not registered in 2025. You need to re-apply for admission.
    • Final-Year Students: If you are in your final year of an undergraduate qualification and wish to continue with postgraduate studies (Honours or Postgraduate Diploma), you must submit a new application for the 2026 academic year

    UNISA Admission Criteria for 2026

Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee a space, as spaces are limited, but it is the first step. The UNISA admission criteria 2026 vary by level of study:

    • Undergraduate: You must meet the statutory and college requirements, often calculated using an Admission Points Score (APS) based on your National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Senior Certificate (SC) results.
    • Postgraduate: You must hold the appropriate undergraduate degree or diploma. For Master’s and Doctoral qualifications, the viability of your research proposal and supervisory capacity within the department are also considered.
    • International Qualifications: If you obtained your qualifications outside South Africa, you must have them evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). You can apply before you have the certificate, but you will need to submit it later to avoid cancellation of your studies.

    Required Documents for Your Application

Before you start your online application, you must have certified copies of your documents scanned and saved on your computer or phone. The files must be PDF, DOC, or TIF, and cannot be larger than 2MB per file . Here is the checklist for UNISA documents required for 2026:

    • A certified copy of your ID document (South African citizens) or a valid passport (international students).
    • School Qualifications: A copy of your Senior Certificate or National Senior Certificate.
    • Academic Transcripts: Copies of all previous official academic record(s) and certificates from other universities, if applicable.
    • Legal Documents: A copy of your marriage certificate or divorce decree if the documents are in a different name to your ID.
    • International Applicants: A SAQA certificate of evaluation for qualifications obtained outside South Africa. (You may apply provisionally without it).
    • Postgraduate Applicants: A research outline, CV, and any additional documents specified by the department.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

    1. Can I apply for more than one course?

For undergraduate and honours programs, you may apply for a maximum of three qualifications, ranking them in order of preference. For Master’s and Doctoral studies, you may only apply for one qualification.

    2. Do I need an SAQA certificate to apply?

If you have a foreign qualification, yes, you will eventually need it. However, you can apply for admission without it. If accepted, you must submit your SAQA certificate by 15 December 2026 to avoid cancellation of your studies .

    3. I forgot to upload a document. What should I do?

You usually have 10 working days from the date of application to upload outstanding documents, provided this falls before the final closing date. E-mailed documents are not accepted, so you must log back into the portal and upload them.

    4. How will I know if I am accepted?

UNISA will inform you of the outcome. Successful applicants will receive an official offer, which must be accepted within the prescribed time. If you miss the deadline, the offer will be withdrawn and given to someone else.

    5. Is there an application fee waiver?

No. The R150 application fee is mandatory for all online applicants and is non-refundable.

Your future starts here. The UNISA Online Application 2026 process is straightforward, but it requires preparation. Don’t wait until the last minute.
