Entry requirements to study Engineering at Private College in South Africa

The entry requirements for engineering courses at private colleges typically follow the National Technical Education (NATED) / Report 191 system, which is structured in levels from N1 to N6.

    • For N1 (Introductory level): You normally just need a Grade 9 or Grade 10 certificate with passes in Mathematics and Physical Science. Some colleges are flexible and may accept equivalent qualifications or allow you to complete these subjects concurrently.
    • For N2–N3 (Intermediate level): Progression is key. You’ll need to have successfully completed the previous level (e.g., an N1 certificate to enter N2, and an N2 certificate to enter N3) in your chosen engineering field.
    • For N4–N6 (National Diploma level): To enter the diploma stream, you generally need a National Senior Certificate (Matric) with Mathematics and Physical Science. Alternatively, an N3 certificate in a related engineering field is a standard entry requirement. Completion of N6, along with 18-24 months of relevant practical experience, allows you to apply for a National Diploma.

Pro Tip: Always contact the college directly to confirm their specific requirements, as there can be variations. They can also advise on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) if you have relevant work experience but lack formal qualifications.

Reach out to one of these colleges today to request a prospectus and take the first step towards your engineering career.
