The Requirements to Study Engineering at a TVET College

TVET engineering courses are offered mainly under the National Certificate (Vocational) and NATED (N2–N6) programmes. Entry requirements depend on the level you are applying for.

    1. Entry-Level Engineering Requirements (N2 / N3)

To study engineering at entry level, most TVET Colleges require:

    • A good pass in Grade 9 or Grade 10
    • Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy)
    • Physical Science or Natural Science
    • Basic literacy skills (English or another language of instruction)

These levels are ideal for students who did not complete Matric or want to build a strong technical foundation before moving to higher engineering studies.

    Common entry-level engineering fields include:

    • Electrical Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Civil Engineering
    • Boilermaking
    • Fitting and Turning

At N2 and N3 level, the focus is on basic theory combined with practical workshop skills, preparing students for artisan training and further study.

Requirements for Higher Engineering Levels (N4 – N6)

For higher NATED engineering programmes (N4 to N6), TVET Colleges usually require:

    • A National Senior Certificate (Matric) or equivalent
    • Mathematics passed (often 40% or higher, depending on the college)
    • Physical Science passed (commonly 40% or higher)

Some colleges may allow progression from N3 to N4 if the student passed all required subjects.

N4–N6 programmes are more advanced and focus on:

    • Engineering theory
    • Applied mathematics
    • Industrial and practical skills
    • Workplace readiness

Engineering Courses Offered at TVET Colleges

Most South African TVET Colleges offer engineering studies in the following areas:

    • Electrical Engineering (Heavy & Light Current)
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Civil Engineering
    • Chemical Engineering
    • Industrial Engineering

These programmes are designed to meet South Africa’s skills shortages and are aligned with industry standards.

    Progression Opportunities After TVET Engineering

One of the biggest advantages of studying engineering at a TVET College is career and academic progression.

After completing NATED engineering programmes, students can:

    • Obtain an N-Diploma in Engineering
    • Enter the workplace as technicians or artisans
    • Progress to Ordinary Diplomas or Further Training Certificates (FTCs)
    • Apply for university of technology or selected university engineering programmes (subject to admission requirements)

TVET Colleges emphasize hands-on practical training, which gives graduates a competitive advantage in the job market.

Understanding the TVET engineering requirements for 2026 is the first step toward a successful technical career. Whether you enter with Grade 9/10 or Matric, TVET Colleges provide clear pathways from basic engineering skills to N-Diplomas and further studies.

Before applying, always check the specific admission requirements of your chosen TVET College, as percentages and subject combinations may differ slightly.

If you plan well and meet the requirements, a TVET engineering qualification can open doors to sustainable employment and long-term career growth in South Africa.
