University of Free State Entry Requirements 2026

Your National Senior Certificate (NSC) is your ticket. For Bachelor’s degree admission, you must meet these baseline criteria:

    • Pass four (4) designated NSC subjects with a rating of 4 (50-59%) or better.
    • Your seven-subject package must include these four designated subjects.

    Designated Subject List:
Accounting, Agricultural Sciences, Business Studies, Consumer Studies, Dramatic Arts, Economics, Engineering Graphics and Design, Geography, History, Information Technology, Languages (your language of instruction plus two others), Life Sciences, Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy, Music, Physical Sciences, Religion Studies, Visual Arts.

Decoding the UFS Admission Point (AP) Score

UFS uses a transparent AP score system. This isn’t just about passing—it’s about your performance. Points are awarded for your top six (6) academic subjects, plus a potential bonus for Life Orientation.

    UFS AP Scoring Table:

    NSC %NSC LevelUFS AP Points
    90-100%78 Points
    80-89%77 Points
    70-79%66 Points
    60-69%55 Points
    50-59%44 Points
    40-49%33 Points
    30-39%22 Points
    0-29%10 Points

Life Orientation Bonus: You earn 1 additional point if you achieve a level 5 (60%) or higher in LO.

How to Calculate Your AP Score: A Practical Example

Let’s say your final NSC results are:

    • English Home Language: 78% (Level 6) = 6 Points
    • Mathematics: 65% (Level 5) = 5 Points
    • Physical Sciences: 62% (Level 5) = 5 Points
    • Life Sciences: 58% (Level 4) = 4 Points
    • Geography: 72% (Level 6) = 6 Points
    • Afrikaans FAL: 55% (Level 4) = 4 Points
    • Life Orientation: 68% (Level 5) = 1 Bonus Point

    Calculation:

    1. Take points from top 6 academic subjects: 6 + 5 + 5 + 4 + 6 + 4 = 30
    2. Add the LO bonus point: 30 + 1 = 31
    3. Your Total AP Score = 31

Crucial Note: Each programme has a minimum AP score requirement, and for competitive programmes (like Health Sciences, Law, or Accounting), the actual required score is often significantly higher. Always check the specific faculty requirements on the official UFS website.

Your journey at the University of the Free State begins with informed choices. Use this guide as your starting point, dive into the details of your chosen field, and prepare to submit an application that stands out.
